Ocean Eversley

"Being able to express myself in a dignified way and be free to do that without suffering the consequences." - Ocean Eversley

Ocean Eversley is a poet, artist, entrepreneur, and longtime Martha’s Vineyard resident whose life and work reflect a deep connection to creativity, identity, and community. Of African American and Cherokee heritage, Ocean has called the Vineyard home for decades after relocating from New York City. For The DAP Project, she contributed a moving original poem in response to the question, “What does freedom mean to you today?” Her words, featured as part of the exhibit, offer a thoughtful and personal reflection on freedom, belonging, and self-expression. Through her art and storytelling, Ocean continues to inspire others to explore the many dimensions of what it means to live freely and authentically.
